Major osmolyte changes during oocyte hydration of a clupeocephalan marine benthophil: Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus)

چکیده
The major inorganic and organic osmolytes responsible for hydrating the oocytes during pre-ovulatory meiotic maturation in autumnand spring-spawning stocks of Atlantic herring are examined. Despite the ovulated eggs of spring-spawning herring being 1.6to 2-fold larger than the autumn-spawning stock, the GSI (27 ± 3%) and degree of oocyte hydration (70–72% water) were similar. Normalising the data with respect to dry mass revealed that the physiological mechanisms underlying the maturational influx of water were the same for both classes of egg. Cl, K and Pi together with a small pool of free amino acids (FAA) represented the driving forces for oocyte hydration. K (autumn and spring) and Pi (spring) maintained their concentrations in the ovulated eggs, while all other ions, including Cl, Na, NH4 + and Mg were significantly diluted. In contrast the FAA concentration increased during the hydration process. Amongst the inorganic ions, Cl showed the greatest increase in the ovulated eggs. The FAA content doubled from 1.5 to 3.3% of dry mass during oocyte hydration and accounted for 29% of the calculated ovoplasmic osmolality in the ovulated eggs from both autumnand spring-spawners. This significant osmotic effect of the small pool of FAA was due to the low water content of the benthic eggs. The differential movement of the inorganic and organic osmolytes that underly oocyte hydration in Atlantic herring are discussed in relation to current models of transmembrane ion flux.

متن کاملDepth-dependent swimbladder compression in herring Clupea harengus observed using magnetic resonance imaging.
Changes in swimbladder morphology in an Atlantic herring Clupea harengus with pressure were examined by magnetic resonance imaging of a dead fish in a purpose-built pressure chamber. Swimbladder volume changed with pressure according to Boyle's Law, but compression in the lateral aspect was greater than in the dorsal aspect. This uneven compression has a reduced effect on acoustic backscatterin...
متن کاملApplication of Quality Index Method, Texture Measurements and Electronic Nose to Assess the Freshness of Atlantic Herring (Clupea harengus) Stored in Ice
Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) is an important commercial fish and shows to be more and more demanded for human consumption. Therefore, it is very important to find good methods for monitoring the freshness of the fish in order to keep it in the best quality for human consumption. In this study, the fish was stored in ice up to 2 weeks. Quality changes during storage were assessed by the Qu...
متن کاملFourteen new microsatellite markers for Atlantic herring Clupea harengus.
Fourteen new microsatellite loci were developed and tested on Atlantic herring Clupea harengus with 39 individuals from Iceland and 49 individuals from Norway. The microsatellites, which contain di, tri and tetranucleotide repeats, are polymorphic (7-30 alleles), with observed heterozygosity ranging between 0·69 and 1·00 and expected heterozygosity between 0·55 and 0·97.
متن کاملLatitudinal Gradient in Otolith Shape among Local Populations of Atlantic Herring (Clupea harengus L.) in Norway
Otolith shape analysis of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) in Norwegian waters shows significant differentiation among fjords and a latitudinal gradient along the coast where neighbouring populations are more similar to each other than to those sampled at larger distances. The otolith shape was obtained using quantitative shape analysis, the outlines were transformed with Wavelet and analysed...
